This is a news story that was published in The DePaulia on the Rohingya crisis. This piece is important for my portfolio as it was my first published work, and shows a mix of research and interviews that pull the story together. It shows that I can approach a topic of which I have little initial knowledge and walk away with a substantial piece.

Writing

This is an essay I wrote for a course on the Noir genre in College. It breaks down the neo-noir tendencies in the films of David Lynch. It took a lot of research to bring the paper together, and I think that I'm able to confront large themes such as what defines genres, yet still retain a level of control over the topic.

This essay is a breakdown of how the camera techniques utilized in the Spanish found-footage horror film [REC] emote empathy in viewers. Through this topic, I was able to further examine how it not only influenced a wave of found-footage films, but how it also uses its format to stand apart from many of the films that followed in its footsteps.

This is another news article published in The DePaulia. It examines MoviePass, looking at how the company in recent months has lost both financial security and connection with its users. To tackle this, I talked to multiple experts and students who owned MoviePass. I think this shows a growth from my previous news stories, as well as shows how I can take my love of films but apply it to a separate kind of writing I usually do.

This is an essay I wrote for a course on Feminism in modern cinema covering horror trends as seen in the 2014 film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Like the David Lynch essay, this also breaks down genre conventions, but this specifically is tacking the horror genre, which is by far my favorite. It was fun to compare the genre tendencies of something I love so much to a movie which so often subverts them.
